James B. Beam Distilling Co. Fills 17 Millionth Barrel of Bourbon Since Prohibition

The James B. Beam Distilling Co. had filled their 17 millionth barrel of bourbon since prohibition. Jim Beam was my bourbon of choice in college and beyond so I'm thinking I've probably accounted for at least 10% of those barrels... This is quite a milestone and has been culminated with the filling of 1 million barrels in the last 18 months alone.

Are Barrel Picks a Waste of Time?

The Bourbon Review has a nice op-ed laying out the argument that barrel picks nowadays are no different than the vast amount of bottles you can already buy on the shelves. As you may already know, a barrel pick is a where bars, individuals, or retailers purchase all the bottles from a single cask and sell them as an exclusive offering.

Beam Suntory Introduces Basil Hayden Toast

Beam Suntory brand Basil Hayden's has announced the launch of Basil Hayden Toast. This new spirit includes a new mash bill that includes brown rice instead of the traditional rye grain and is made with toasted barrels.

For those new to bourbon, char refers to the amount of flame and char that the wood takes on. The thought is that the more char a barrel has, the more it will influence the taste of the bourbon because the liquid will take on the characteristics of the char. So with that, a toasted char is on the lighter side. You can learn way more than you ever needed to know about char by checking out this link

July 2021 in Review

Welcome to the July 2021 recap.

This was a tough and emotional month as we lost our Tobey at 15 years and 7 months. He was far and away the greatest thing that ever happened in my life. He has moved from outside our bodies to inside our hearts. To honor his legacy, I'm raising money for the Citizen's for Humane Action animal shelter in Columbus, Ohio and will be participating in their 31st annual Dog Jog on October 3rd. I will personally be matching the first $1500 I raise. If you are interested, you can donate here

Old Fourth Avenue Distillery Bottled-In-Bond Review

Welcome to the review for Old Fourth Avenue Distillery Bottled-In-Bond. This is a product that was recommended by one of my favorite co-workers. I have family in Atlanta and they scored me a bottle as a gift.

I love the concept of bottled-in-bond. As you may know, for something to be designated bottled-in-bond, the bourbon must meet specific criteria. It must:

  • Be the product of one distillation season (January–June or July–December by one distiller at one distillery.
  • Been aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years
  • Bottled at 100 (U.S.) proof (50% alcohol by volume).
  • Be produced in the United States
For me, it puts bourbons on equal footing where we can better compare them against each other because everything is equal (proof, age, etc.). It reminds me of the old IROC series in racing where all the drivers got identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability.

For this bourbon, it's sourced from MGP in Indiana and then aged in a warehouse in East Atlanta.

Let's get started with the basics.

Buffalo Trace Announces Latest Experimental Collection - Baijiu Style

Buffalo Trace has announced the limited release of a Baijiu style spirit aged in new American oak casks. For those unaware (like myself), Baijiu is regarded as the largest selling spirit in the world, make up an estimated 31% of global sales... which is crazy because I have never heard of it until right now. Baijiu is a clear liquid usually distilled from fermented sorghum (or sometimes rice) and uses a distinct type of Qū for fermentation. Per Wikipedia, Qū is a type of East Asian dried fermentation starter grown on a solid medium and used in the production of traditional Chinese alcoholic beverages. Whew, a lot to unpack. Let's talk about the Buffalo Trace release.

That headline is a mess so let me try to break it down a bit. Announcement: Current Email Subscription Service being Discontinued in July

In some sad news, Google notified me that their FollowByEmail widget will be discontinued in July. In the meantime, I'll be trying to find a new email option for those interested. Obviously, it needs to be one where there is privacy, security, and no 3rd party selling or anything like that. If you know of any like that, drop a note in the comment box below.

TL:DR

If you current get updates from the site via email, Google is removing that functionality in July. In the meantime, I'll be on the lookout for a new subscribe by email option, but you'll need to sign up again once that is in place.

Blanton's, Eagle Rare, and E.H. Taylor Lottery Breakdown

The State has announced the winners of the latest bourbon lottery. Per usual, my wife and I continued our streak of not winning. I'm always curious about what the odds are for the lotteries so I reached out to OHLQ for the final numbers...

Happy Friday. Do you have the final numbers for the number of entries for each lottery as well as the number of bottles available?

The response didn't directly answer my question... they responded simply by saying 'Entry: 59,974 with 1704 bottles available... this didn't address the number of entries for each lottery because technically, each lottery could be entered independently. Alas.

A YouTube Recommendation - Cocktail Chemistry

There is so much great content available today, it's often difficult to find new or interesting places and people. Thankfully, I'm here to help with one of my favorites from YouTube and some of my favorite videos.

The channel is Cocktail Chemistry and features the mixologist Nick making different variations of different drinks. The premise is super simple, but executed flawlessly. We'll start with the recreated 'Peppermint Patty' from Archer.

Q&A #2 - A Columbus Bourbon Second!

It's been a few months and I had a good time with the first Q&A so I figured I'd so a second. A few people wrote in after the first one asking if these are real questions. If they have a name with them or say anonymous, they are questions I've received. If they don't, then it's a question people ask in person or questions I would think people may have. With that said, let's get started!

My first haircut at the start of the pandemic in March/April of 2020.
Hard to believe it's been a full year of COVID-19.

Q. Big Jonkulous writes "To each their own, but I really question your sense of taste/smell. This stuff is a steal at $20ish, and is loaded with flavor. I need to blind this and OF1910, because it's every bit as delicious and banana-bready, but for half the price."
