Bulleit 12 Year Rye

Welcome to the review for Bulleit 12 Year Rye.

If you haven't heard, Bulleit has been in the news for some negative reasons that include allegations of discrimination, sexual, and physical abuse assault against an LGBT member of the Bulleit family by the family patriarch. It has escalated to the point that parent company Diagio has removed the figurehead from representing the brand.

The news on Bulleit is very disturbing and if you have ethical concerns over supporting companies based on their behavior, this is something to keep in mind. I'm not going to let the news influence the review, but rather if I buy Bulleit in the future.

As always, I'll get started with the specifications.

A Look Inside 'No Soliciting', A Private Bourbon Bar in Columbus, Ohio

I was recently part of an event put on by Louisville Tourism at 'Columbus's most exclusive Bourbon bar, No Soliciting'. This is one of Columbus's most closely guarded bars so I'm excited to pull back the curtain. The bar is owned by Rise Brands, which also owns Pins Mechanical Co and 16-Bit Bar+arcade.

The way this private bourbon bar works is there is a $1000 yearly membership charge, which grants entry, and then the members purchase their drinks by adding them to their account, which is billed monthly. No cash or tipping is allowed.

A Guide to Getting Hard to Find Bottles in Ohio

One of the top questions I receive at this site is how to locate hard to find bottles in Ohio. I also can't begin to count how many times I've been in a liquor store and have seen someone ask if they have any bottles of Blanton's available (spoiler alert... they don't).

I've written plenty about why I don't believe the state should control liquor distribution in the state and the many disadvantages that it has for consumers. However, one of the main advantages of this system is the state is in full control of where bottles are at any given time because they are the sole distributor.

With this being the 16th, I thought it would be a good opportunity to lift the veil and review the reviews and create an FAQ of sorts.

451 Spirits Bone Shaker Whiskey Review

Welcome to the 3rd spirit I'm reviewing that originates from the great state of Ohio. I started with Cleveland Black Reserve Bourbon (57/100) and followed that with Middle West Spirits Straight Rye, which fared slightly better (64/100). Neither of those two are my favorites so I'm hopeful that the bottle of 451 Spirits Bone Shaker Whiskey I received as a gift could finally be the Ohio spirit we need.

Bone Shaker is unique in that 451 Spirits allows the mash to ferment for a week or more. It is then double distilled in a traditional style pot still. From their site:
After distillation the whiskey begins the maturation process, first, in small 23 gallon barrels. After a few months a portion of this whiskey is transferred to larger 53 gallon barrels. The small barrels are then topped off with new make whiskey and the process begins again.
The whiskies are 100% pure pot still which allows for some deeper heavier flavors while sacrificing efficiency and they are kind of a cross between American and Scotch style whiskies.

With that said, let's see if their techniques will make this a bourbon to seek out. As always, I'll get started with the specifications.
