Buffalo Trace Announces Weller Full Proof Bourbon

Buffalo Trace has announced a new offering in the form of Well Full Proof Bourbon coming in at a whopping 114 proof. The name is based on the way that Buffalo Trace Distillery fills their wheated bourbon barrels at 114 proof.

In a statement, Kris Comstock, senior marketing director states:
“We expect fans of Weller will be excited about this new offering. Bourbon drinkers are asking us for high proof and non-chill filtered bourbon more and more, bar owners and liquor stores who have selected barrels of Weller over the years will regularly request their bourbon to be non-chill filtered. It will be nice to offer Weller Full Proof as an option.”
This new option forgoes chill filtration to preserve all the naturally occurring residual oils and flavors, but this whiskey can potentially appear cloudy when cold. The tasting notes are:

Nose: Vanilla, dark cherries, and caramel.
Taste: Balance of caramel and toasted oak.
Finish: Long, with notes of crème brulee and chocolate.

Weller Full Proof shares the same mash bill as other Weller products and will be available beginning in June in limited quantities at a MSRP of $49.99. Going forward it will be released once per year in limited quantities.

Our Take

No brand is better at creating pent up (and sometimes unwarranted) demand better than Weller and Buffalo Trace. This sounds like another product that exists, but will be nearly impossible to actually get our hands on (see Weller 12). We reached out to Buffalo Trace and there is no age statement and they would not comment on the quantity that will be released nor if Ohio was targeted to be released. We anticipate this will show up in the year end auction or as a raffle at limited locations throughout the state. In terms of the Weller brand, we were impressed with the Weller Antique and have the Reserve in the hopper do some reviews on.

As always, check back to ColumbusBourbon.com for all the Weller and Buffalo Trace updates.
