Michter's Announces 2023 Release of 10-Year Straight Bourbon

Michter's has announced the release of their 2023 edition of their 10-year bourbon. This release skipped last year so this will be the first time in two years consumers will be able to purchase this at retail.

Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco says:
"I thought that the 10 Year Bourbon we are now releasing was drinking beautifully last year, but our Master Distiller Dan McKee and our Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson told me that with one more year of maturation it would be extraordinary. At Michter's the goal we strive for is to produce the greatest American whiskey. We're grateful for all the understanding and patience that our loyal Michter's fans have shown in waiting an additional year for the release of our 10 Year Bourbon.

The 2023 release comes in with an MSRP of $185, bottled at 94.4 proof (47.2% alcohol) and carries the following tasting notes:

Big and bold dark toffee and caramel, charred oak, maple syrup, vanilla.

This is the second giant price hike for this release. The 2020 came in at $130, then jumped up 15% to $150 in 2021 and now has jumped another 23% to the $185 price for the 2023 version. All told, since 2020, the price has gone up 42%.

My Take

First off, the price hikes are crazy. Core inflation averaged 4.10% per year between 2020 and 2023 for an inflation total of 12.80%. This is getting to the price point where it's not worth the money. There are a lot of older bourbons available... for instance, the The Ohio Department of Liquor (OHLQ) released ten barrels of Four Roses last week that all had a longer age statement than Michter's.
