Angel's Envy Releases 2022 Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Port Wine Barrels

Angel's Envy has announced the 11th release of their annual cask strength. This year is their bourbon aged for up to 14 additional months in Port Wine casks. This release includes 16,980 bottles and will be available in all 50 states for an MSRP of $229.99.

Gigi DaDan, General Manager of Angel's Envy says:
Our annual Cask Strength expression is our most highly anticipated annual tradition at Angel's Envy, both for our team and for our fans, and this year's release is special – not just because it is an exceptional whiskey, but because it also marks an exciting time in Angel's Envy's growth. Looking ahead, we can't wait to see the unique perspective that our new Master Distiller Owen Martin will bring to the Cask Strength program as he oversees it with the support of our best-in-class production team.

This year's release comes in at 119.8 proof (59.9% alcohol) and carries the following tasting notes:

Nose: Leather, brown sugar and caramel on the nose, followed by crème brûlée and marshmallow with notes of green apple and orange.

Taste: Apples, caramel, and brown sugar are present, and the creaminess pairs with the orange from the nose to give a creamsicle richness. Vanilla, toasted oak and black pepper spice round out the flavor

Finish: A light fruitiness, grape tannic notes and a lingering spice.

My Take

There are just so many bourbons lately that are finished in a secondary barrel. In the last month, we've had a double oak and a red wine limited release... now it's time for the Port Wine barrel. For me, I don't need the gimmicks... I really enjoy traditional bourbon in wood casks... I understand the double aging as it keeps the integrity of the flavor, but the mixing of bourbon and different wine barrels doesn't get me excited. Obviously, there is a quite a demand for this or the distilleries wouldn't keep releasing them. With that said, if this is your jam, definitely search out a bottle... however, this is a pass for me.
