MGP Announces Single Barrel Programs for George Remus Bourbon and Rossville Union Rye

Lawrenceburg, Indiana based MGP has announced two limited releases from George Remus Bourbon and Rossville Union Rye. These new releases will both be available in two distinct mash bills.
Andrew Mansinne, Vice President of Brands says:
We're proud to age some of the finest whiskey barrels in the country at our Lawrenceburg distillery. We feel that the time has come to provide our customers with access to George Remus and Rossville Union Single Barrels. Single Barrels are in high demand, and we're in a unique position to offer a choice of mash bills to our trade partners.
As mentioned, both spirits come in two different mashbills. The Remus comes in with the first being 21% rye, 75% corn, and 4% barley malt. The second mash bill heavier on the rye with 36% rye, 60% corn, and 4% barley malt. Both are bottled at barrel strength so the proof and volume will vary by barrel. The suggested retail price is $59.99 per 750ml bottle.

The Rossville Union also comes in two mash bills. The first is 51% rye and 49% barley malt. The second is 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% barley malt. The Rossville Union is a bottled-in-bond product so by law, it comes in at 100 proof (50% alcohol) and has a suggested retail price of $49.99.

This announcement is for participating accounts so they can order bottles by March 18th. The bottles will ship in September of 2020 and be available for sale after that point.

My Take

This was a weird announcement because it was aimed at MGP accounts who can place orders. The bottles won't be available to consumers until September at the earliest and there are no guarantees that these will come to Ohio because there is only the State who can place an order. That's part of the problem by having everything run through the government. In a better system, each store or liquor company could supply what they feel is best for their consumers.

In terms of the bourbons and whiskey, both seem like good options. I especially like the Rossville Union at 51% rye and 45% corn and I think both Remus mash bills are intriguing. Hopefully the State will place an order and we'll see this on shelves in September.
