Ohio Division of Liquor Control Announces Smooth Ambler Old Scout Barrel Selection - Available August 2

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control has announced the availability of Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel at select liquor stores (listed at the bottom) beginning at 9am on August 2nd. Each location will receive a minimum of 42 bottles. Additionally, Smooth Ambler Master Blender Andrew Robinson will be on hand at the Chagrin Valley Beverage location for a bottle signing.

The Smooth Ambler Old Scout Barrel Selection is made up of nine barrels hand picked for Ohio in partnership with Master Distiller John Little and Master Blender Andrew Robinson. These are a mixture of an 11 year Indiana bourbon and a six year old Tennessee whiskey that were then aged an additional 90 days to create the custom barrels for Ohio. It comes in at 107 proof and will sell for $39.99 + tax.

Our Take

This is the second release of Smooth Ambler this summer with the previous happening on June 27 and included Smooth Ambler Big Level Wheated and Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel Select 13 Year Cask Strength. I sat that one out because I didn't have any experience with Smooth Ambler and there wasn't enough allocation to ensure everyone could get a bottle.

As we fast forward to August, I don't have any experience with Smooth Ambler before so I can't speak to the quality or uniqueness of their product. For this specific release, I'm not overly excited about the Tennessee whiskey or the Indiana bourbon... Mixing them together doesn't make it more appealing. For that reason and having never had Smooth Ambler, this is an event I'm going to personally pass on.
