Ohio Division of Liquor Control Announces Smooth Ambler Selections - Available June 27

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control has announced the availability of Smooth Ambler Big Level Wheated and Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel Select 13 Year Cask Strength. This is the first time the Big Level Wheated will be available in Ohio. Both selections will hit shelves at select liquor stores (listed at the bottom) beginning at store open on June 27th. Each location will receive 21 bottles of each product.

The Smooth Ambler Big Level Wheated bourbon is distilled and bottled in West Virginia. It is aged six years in white oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof (50% alcohol). It will retail for $54.99 + tax. The tasting notes are:

Nose: Sweet & buttery with notes of toffee and pancake batter
Taste: Heat
Finish: Smooth with hints of toasted tree nuts and pipe tobacco

Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel Select 13 Year Cask Strength is a bourbon distilled in Tennessee and bottled in West Virginia. Each bottle has a unique proof that will be listed on the label. It will retail for $64.99 + tax. The tasting notes are:

Nose: Butterscotch with hints of leather and pipe tobacco
Taste: Sweet and spicy with lots of oak and caramel
finish: Smooth

Our Take

I don't have any experience with Smooth Ambler before so I can't speak to the quality or uniqueness of their product. If you're a huge fan of them or looking to try a new product, this could be your type of event. Given the low quantities (21 bottles per product/per store), I'd recommend arriving before store-open to ensure you get a bottle. Having said that, this is an event I'm going to personally pass on.
