Alberta Premium To Sell Whisky In U.S. For The First Time

Alberta Premium, a Canadian company, has announced that they are taking their Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye Whisky to the United States in limited quantities (note: I'm spelling it whisky in this article because that is how it is spelled in the press release).

George Teichroeb, General Manager of Alberta Distillery says:
Alberta Distillers prides ourselves on being the producer of the world's number one selling 100% rye whisky in Alberta Premium. We wanted to release a cask strength rye so our whisky fans can experience a 100% rye whisky in its purest form: straight from the barrel. This whisky truly is a great representative of our commitment to crafting superior rye whisky.

Alberta Distillery is unique in that the brand says it is 'distilled from the finest Canadian prairie grains grown by local farmers and refreshing glacier-fed Rocky Mountain spring water.'

Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye comes in with a proof between 127.8 - 132 proof (63.9-66.0% Alcohol) and carries an MSRP of $69.95 for a 750ml bottle and contains the below tasting notes. No official word on if this will be available in Ohio or when, but they mention a nationwide rollout.

Nose: Sweet, woody and oaky with a hint of vanilla

Taste: Exceptionally smooth with notes of caramel, vanilla, and just a hint of chocolate that balance the spiciness of rye and black currant

Finish: Smooth and lingering with the complexity of spice, warm vanilla and dark fruit

My Take

I haven't written or reviewed many Canadian whiskeys other than one or two of the Crown Royal products. So with that, I don't have a ton of experience with Canadian whiskey, but this could be a good place to start. The presentation looks solid and I like that it's cask strength. The price seems reasonable as well. If you're looking to give Canadian Whiskey a try, this could be the place start.

  1. This was out in Central Ohio the same week that Midwinter's Night dram was released the week of 12/15 to be exact.
