Michter's Announces Release of Toasted Barrel Finish Rye

Michter's has announced the September release of a limited amount of US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye. The Toasted Barrel Finish Rye is made by taking matured Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye at barrel strength and further aging it in a second custom barrel.

Joseph J. Magliocco, Michter's President says:
The reception that our Toasted Barrel Finish whiskeys have received is a result of tremendously focused work done by our production team led by Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. Despite the continuing shortages across all our whiskey stocks, we really wanted to make some of our rye available for this special release

The average proof for this release is 109.2 (54.6% alcohol). Each 750ml bottle carries an MSRP of $85. No age statement or tasting notes were provided.

My Take

It seems a lot of distilleries are releasing bourbons and whiskies that are finished in a second barrel. For instance, in the last month... Maker's Mark announced the 2020 Wood Finishing Series and Angel's Envy announced a bourbon finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak Casks. In my opinion, a lot of the distilleries are looking to capitalize on the success of Woodford Double Oaked, which to many, is the gold standard of double aged bourbon.

In terms of this release... $85 is a lot to charge without releasing an age statement or any tasting notes. The picture looks nice, but without any actual information, this is one I'm going to pass on.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
