Basil Hayden's Announces Limited Edition Caribbean Reserve Rye

Jim Beam owned Basil Hayden's has announced the release of a limited edition Basil Hayden's Caribbean Reserve Rye. This new rye is a blend of 8-year-old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey and 4-year-old Canadian Rye Whisky, which is then finished with Black Strap Rum.

With the blending of the ryes, the intent is to bring notes of spice, toasted oak and vanilla notes then the rum brings out notes of brown sugar and molasses. Rob Mason, Vice President Marketing, Whiskey at Beam Suntory says:
"With the release of Caribbean Reserve Rye, we wanted to give our fans a fun whiskey expression that you can bring out and share during warmer weather occasions, whether that's mixing it up at an outdoor barbeque or gifting it for a housewarming celebration. As a brand that has always broken traditional whiskey expectations, we're excited to help our fans discover new, interesting ways to enjoy the rye category, and Caribbean Reserve Rye does just that."
This new whiskey, similar to the other Basil Haden's varieties, comes in at 80 proof (40% alcohol), has a suggested MSRP of $44.99 for a 750mL bottle and is going to be available nationwide. The official tasting notes are:
Nose: Rich caramel and brown sugar complemented by back notes of soft rye and vanilla
Taste: A balanced blend of sumptuous rye and brown sweets with an ample woody accent
Finish: A pleasant, long lingering warmth
Our Take

I'm usually a big fan of Basil Hayden's. Their bourbon is one of our highest rated so far and we have the 10 year in the hopper for a future review... however, this blend seems bizarre and I'm not sure mixing bourbon and rum is going to produce a flavor that the typical whiskey lover is going to love. At this price point, I think I'm more inclined to try some of the other Basil Hayden's flavors such as the Dark Rye or the Two-By-Two.
